Yesterday, I wrote about the Wedding at Cana and how it puzzled me. The postscript to that episode is arresting and moving and worth its own look.

For me, the Wedding at Cana has always been one of the most troubling miracles. When I look at the text, I am first excited by the fact that Jesus seems to be some sort of party guy. Yeah! He’s turning the water into wine! But, then I’m troubled by the little conversation that he has with his mother.

Looking down at my journal, I can see that I am lost a bit. Allow me to show you the passage, and then I’ll give a couple of thoughts on it.

There have been many times in my life when I’ve been incredulous, especially about the skills of someone I know. Yes, I realize this makes me sound like a bit of a jerk. But, every now and then, I find myself saying: “Really? Can anything good possibly come out of this?” When Philip tells his buddy Nathanael about Jesus the son of Joseph from Nazareth, Nathanael’s response is similar to mine.

Sometimes you meet a person and you know that there is something immediately different about him or her. You know that that person has been touched or blessed by someone greater for something greater. These are just hunches that we have. I believe John the Baptist was one of those guys.

In a modern world, it is all too easy to allow our reliance on empirical data and facts to govern how we see and understand the world. This is why, as a Christian, I often feel it is helpful to adopt a postmodern, bordering on deconstructionist, view of the world. What we see is not always what we get, and the easiest, most straightforward interpretation is not always the best. We live in a world where Occam’s Razor cannot be trusted. John the Baptist’s response to the Pharisees is a case of “what you want is not always what you get.”

In John 1:19–23 a group of people press in on John the Baptist wanting to know who exactly he is. This got me to thinking about self-identification and labels and all that rigamarole. Here are some thoughts.

God has revealed himself to us in so many ways. The most meaningful and most important revelation, however, was Jesus Christ himself. In John 1:14, we are told that “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The Almighty humbled himself and planted his feet firmly on the Earth.

John 1:5–8 presented a momentary digression about John the Baptist, a figure to whom we will return shortly, the following verses (vv. 9–13) return to the previous discussion of Word, Light, and what exactly God is doing.

Previously, I looked at John 1:1–5, the very beginning of the prologue. Now, I’d like to go to the next chunk of the gospel which raises some interesting insights about God’s plan. Hebert Translation Nestle-Aland 27 There was a human, sent from God, by the name of John. This one came as a witness so [...]

Over the past month I’ve been working my way slowly through the Gospel of John. I can think of no better way to revive my interest in Withering Fig than by walking through my thoughts. Hebert Translation Nestle-Aland 27 In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God, and God was The [...]
