Continuing with John 6, there is a tiny little story that is probably missed by most folks. On the surface it appears to be just a bit of narrative with very little significance. Truly, from a theological standpoint, there are only a few things to pull out of it (e.g., the fact that John refers to Jesus as “Lord” [κύριος] denoting a high Christology). However, on a gut level, there is something else to see here — the hunger and thirst of the people.

In keeping with yesterday’s idea of picking out one strange thing in a miracle of Jesus, let’s look at the next item after the Feeding of the 5,000 — Jesus Walks on Water. John’s version of the story is a little different from the Synoptic versions. John dispenses with the idea that Peter too walked […]

This morning I read “The Feeding of the 5,000” as presented in John’s gospel (John 6:1–15). One particular verse struck me in a way that it had not before.

The latter portion of John 5 shows Jesus preaching on his own authority and who and what has witnessed or testified about him. This morning, I read John 5:39–40 and was struck by how it applies to my own thinking.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19 Paul tells us that our bodies are temples because the Holy Spirit dwells inside. This is a beautiful idea really. When you bring that notion to bear on what Jesus does in John 2 when he cleanses the Temple, a powerful metaphor for Christian living is created.

Yesterday, I wrote about the Wedding at Cana and how it puzzled me. The postscript to that episode is arresting and moving and worth its own look.

For me, the Wedding at Cana has always been one of the most troubling miracles. When I look at the text, I am first excited by the fact that Jesus seems to be some sort of party guy. Yeah! He’s turning the water into wine! But, then I’m troubled by the little conversation that he has with his mother.

Looking down at my journal, I can see that I am lost a bit. Allow me to show you the passage, and then I’ll give a couple of thoughts on it.

There have been many times in my life when I’ve been incredulous, especially about the skills of someone I know. Yes, I realize this makes me sound like a bit of a jerk. But, every now and then, I find myself saying: “Really? Can anything good possibly come out of this?” When Philip tells his buddy Nathanael about Jesus the son of Joseph from Nazareth, Nathanael’s response is similar to mine.

If God is omniscient, then he knows what we’re thinking; he knows the desires of our hearts. He would even know those things that we haven’t figured out yet. He would know exactly what we wanted before we even realized that we wanted it. In the midst of the insanity that is my life, I sometimes here God say these words to me: “What do you want?” There is a biblical precedent for this…

Sometimes you meet a person and you know that there is something immediately different about him or her. You know that that person has been touched or blessed by someone greater for something greater. These are just hunches that we have. I believe John the Baptist was one of those guys.
