This is the 21st part in an ongoing series on the Epistles of John.

English Standard Version Nestle-Aland 27
No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.

Yesterday, we learned that the antichrist(s) is defined as a person who “denies the Father and the Son.” John reiterates that no one who denies the Son has the Father. This shows the irrevocable connection between the Father and the Son. There is absolutely no possibility of knowing one without knowing the other. Jesus himself tells us: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Jesus gets even more concrete in an earlier statement: “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30).

If denying the Son means that you deny the Father (because the two are one and the same, I would say), then the reverse must be true: confessing the Son means that you have the Father.

By this time, it should be clear that this Father and Son are not your typical dad and lad. There are certainly times when we don’t want to be associated with our fathers. Indeed, I am sure there are times when we don’t want to be associated with our sons. But, for God, this is an impossibility. The Father and the Son are one—you can’t separate them. They cannot be torn apart, ripped away from each other. They must be together. They are one and the same.

Next John gets back to this language of “abiding.” Alan Knox discusses this notion of “abiding in Christ” here and here. Additionally, we have seen this idea crop up in 1 John 2:3–6, 9–11, and 2:14. So, I won’t belabor it here.

The end of all of this is the lovely, short, compact statement of v. 25: “And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.”

The Father and Son are eternal supreme beings—they are God. Yet, they abide in us. By doing so, He has fulfilled a great promise and given us an unimaginable gift: eternal life. We can go through all kinds of theological musings and meanderings to explain why that is, how that works, but, in the end, sometimes it’s best just to consider the glory and wonder of it all:

The Lord abides in us, and gives us eternal life.
