I think your example is very applicable to our discussion of the local church. If we view the local church as an organization, then they were right in excluding you - you were not part of the organization. I'm not sure that this understanding of the church can be found in Scripture. If, instead, we view the local church as all of the believers with whom we interact regularly - which, to me, seems to be the model that we see in Scripture - then they were wrong to exclude you.
