Hal, excellent point re: how the search for Communists might have been worthwhile in reality — though, I don't think that Bob Dylan in 1963/1964 would've shared your view.

What do you think Dylan is trying to do with this song then? Do you think "Talkin' John Birch" is trying to bolster the JBS's cause?

I like that you use Dylan to critique Dylan by quoting "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking" from 1979's Slow Train Coming. What do you think the Christian Dylan of the late 1970s would have to say to the folk protest Dylan of the early 1960s?

There was nothing idiotic and paranoid about "searching for communists." When Dylan's song first came out, millions of human souls were perishing in Communist China and in the Soviet Bloc. Our nation's cities were going up in flames. Communists in the Civil Rights Movement? John Kennedy personally warned Martin Luther King about communists in his movment. This information can be found in Gary Allen's book "Communist Revolution in the Streets" and in It's Very Simple" by Alan Stang.

A little more than a year ago, the people of the U.S. elected a man as president of the U.S.A. who started his political career in the living room of an unrepented communist terrorist Bill Ayers and spend 20 years in a church whose pastor preached a racist Black Liberation Theology. Take the advise of Bob Dylan: "I gotta change my way of things..Stop being influenced by fools.."
