Better Bibles Blog: unveiling the ESV
Picking up on an old story. Wayne Leman over at the Better Bibles Blog has an interesting note about the difference between the RSV and the ESV at 1 Cor 11:10.
The crux of the matter is the word εξουσίαν. My own translation of this verse would look something like this:
“Because of this, the woman/wife should have authority/power on her head on account of the angels.”
In my opinion, the RSV’s use of the word “veil” and the ESV’s addition of “authority of” are not entirely faithful to the text. However, given a choice between the two, I’d have to go with the ESV.
